companion plant suggestions for containers

I would be grateful for some suggestions for native groundcovers/living mulch type plants that I can use in my containers. I have 6 sandsone troughs in my courtyard along the wall (each about 1m long), in full sun most of the day. I've recently planted one native in each - banksias, callistemons and grevilleas - which are all doing well so far, still very young. I would like to plant things that will brighten, trail over the troughs a little and not compete with the main shrubs. Something native or succulent that can take the sun & wettish Sydney winters, fairly hardy. Does anyone have any ideas for me? Thank you. Lynne.

Rhodanthes would look good in there, and would do quite well. I believe the don't last forever, but you would get a number of years out of them.

Hi Lynne I have seen a Grevillea at my local landscaping yard hanging down over a brick wall, beautiful but dont know the name. Have a look at the link below as it will give you all the native ground covers especially for your area. Cheers..MM.
Here is a link that might be useful: Flora for Fauna.

Oooh, my favourite topic! You have to grow Stylidium debile. Also consider alpine species. I have a nice viola hederacea (dog violet) that trails.

Lechenaultias come in red, blue, orange, yellow and pink. They are very, very bright and flower for a long time. I'm surprised no one has suggested scaevola, the purple fan flower. It looks lovely spilling over rocks and hanging baskets, so would be great in a large planter. There was a pale lilac one available last year which I found rather wishywashy, the blue/purple one is much brighter. |

You would love the many small ground covers that grow in Sydney - Scaevola, prostrate forms of Grevilleas, Hibbertias, Eremophila, Acacia, Pea flowers, Ziera, Goodenia, etc, etc. I would also think about contrasting foliage like Dianella 'Cassa Blue', Thelionema umbellatum, or Lomandra 'Wingarra'. Yellow Buttons (Helichrysum ramosissima - has had name changes though, and there are many forms)or Billy Buttons (Ixeolena brevicompta) are great!
