Eucalyptus trees dying.

Hi,
We plant eucalyptus trees in India every three years they are harvested and new ones are planted. New trees are generally planted at the end of summer. (The weather is
hot and extremely humid). If the region gets a lot of rain showers at least 10% of the trees develop a condition.

The tips of leaves turn dry (brown).
The tree's growth slows down.
All new leaves that come out are a yellow color and eventually the trees start having red leaves.

It is interesting that the leaves that grew initially are still green.

This spreads to other nearby trees if the infected tree is not uprooted and burnt at an early stage.

Could somebody explain why this happens and what can be done to prevent it?

We also have termites from time to time. Could someone suggest a prevention/cure for that too?

Thx,
X

I think you should get a specialist in to look at your trees. It could be a pathogen, or a mineral deficiency.

Many eucalypts have new growth that is red, orange, pink or even blue. It may just be that the plant is growing enthusiastically. Do the leaves stay red for a long time (more than a month)?

Does removing all the leaves and letting it reshoot help?

Actually the trees loose all their leaves after the red leaves come out.

We had a specialist look at it but he did not have a definite answer and did not sound very convincing either.

He said it could be soil fungus causing the problem. He asked us to add some chemical with Zinc for the fungus. He also asked us to add amino acids in the soil to bring the infected trees back to life. Mean while we are adding some medicine for termites. I can get the names of all the medicines in a day or two if that helps.

Thanks,

RE: Eucalyptus trees dying - Addition to the previous

I read some where that adding low levels of phosphites can help the infected trees is that true?

It may be advantageous to contact the Department of Forestry in Virginia.

what kind of Eucalypts are they? Are you using a variety that is from a hot and humid area of Australia?

RE: Eucalyptus trees dying.

It does kind of sound like a fungal disease in the roots, and about the only thing you can do is get rid of them and burn them once it has started. You probably shouldn't use the same ground for awhile either. If it is phytophora cinnamonii then there isn't really any cure or treatment, but there are some preventative measures (do a google). Some eucalyptus are more susceptible than others; the ones from wetter areas are less susceptible, so if your trees are from the south or west part of Oz then you could try getting some from the east.
