Tropical Rainforest Trees - are buttress roots invasive

Posted by justafarmer QLD/NSW (My Page) on

I'm planning to plant some small to medium tropical rainforest tree species indoors in a planter pit formed within the concrete floor slab in an atrium in our house. As the slab is continuous with the rest of the house, I'm concerned that these species' root systems will invade into the cracks of the slab causing further cracking and disruption to the floor structure.

Are these root systems invasive, like the root systems of species like ficus? If so, will planting in a plastic non perforated container within the soil of the main planter pit restrict the invasiveness?

RE: Tropical Rainforest Trees - are buttress roots inva

g'day justafarmer,

might be best to stick to things like palm trees and cordelines and dracaenas. anything from the rain forest with a buttress is going to have roots that could be invasive, just think there are some things we can have living with us and other things should be a safe distance away.

most gardeners are at these other places now:
