Hey all

I suppose it does help that we are so spread out across this graet brown land (green in or gardens though)
but when I look through some posts there is also a large group that answer alot of these questions
consistently
Now I really cannot thank the faceless but informative webbers enough but thank you

Well I think age has a lot to do with it. I dont know a lot about one plant but I know a little about a lot of plants and living in one end of Australia to the other helps too if you have been into gardening for say around 40 years or more. Then there are the ones who get all that info from their careers and what they have learnt over the years, they are a wealth of knowledge for us garden webbers and I would like to Thank them all for their input as without them we would be Googling all night. So Many Thanks to all you clever people for all the help you have given me and all the Gardenwebbers.. Cheers..MM.

Hi Waz, Some of us have been around plants and soil most of our lives, so far, some have seen many summers, some hope to see many more, most of us have had hands on experience in garden, nursery industry and most like to share any experience with plants and soils in our local area. What works for some may not work for others in such a big and wide variety of different growing conditions in this country. Only experience(getting your hands dirty)will be of use to you, you will never finnish unless you start.I have to go and mow the lawn and clean-up after the storm last week, but this is where we hang out when not out in the garden, or at work. Good luck. Peter r |

I'd just like to say thanks to all those who have given me advice. I used to be in the nursery industry many years ago and did a lot of hands on work but it was so long ago that I have forgotten a lot and new plants, etc have been brought out. Since my kids have come along I haven't really had the time to get into the garden much but now they're getting older, I find I get more time now - a little more anyway. Reading all the items in garden web has really kept my incentive up, brought back a few memories and given me new ideas. Like anything new, gardening can seem complicated but most of it is just a little research and commonsense. If you read a gardening book about pests and diseases you'd wonder how plants survive but in reality only a few of the pests actually cause problems in any given area. It won't be long and you will be answering some of these questions yourself.

As a novice gardener (< 5 years), I have to agree with warcrazy - this forum is a wealth of information. It does sadden me that its not a little better organised though - I'd like to see the more comprehensive posts in a database, with a search engine etc : this would avoid the situation where the same members find themselves answering the same questions (how many 'fast-growing shrub' questions do we have across each of the forums on Gardenweb, for example ?) At this stage, I like to think that I've acquired a reasonable amount of knowledge on different plants, particularly natives, but in reality I know next to nothing. Things like propagation techniques and disease/pest eradication remain 'black arts' : I might be able to find something in a magazine that tells me to use a specific product to treat some ailment or other, but I dont know *why* I should use product X for problem Y. Similarly, if a plant suddenly begins to wilt despite plenty of moisture in the soil, it has to be something pretty obvious for old Sherlock Holmes here to diagnose it. That's what separates the novice from the experienced gardener, IMO, but its a journey well worth taking. To those who suffer our repetitious queries week-after-week, please know that we do appreciate it. Cheers, Artie

Waz, handle the plants. The more that you grow, propagate, read about then the more sticks.

Artie There is a search function at the top right of the garden web page - I have found it quite useful. Cheers Dan
