Lawn over run with weeds

Posted by gjlittle Bendigo, Victoria (My Page) on

I have recently taken an interest in gardenning and while I will convert most of my land into gardens, I still want to leave a section as lawn. How it has become over run with weeds of all sorts due to non existent care and bad drought conditions.

I would like to plant a native grass, one that does not require too much maintenance and very little water but what weeds are in the soil grow so fast, I am afraid they will take over the soil before and grasses can establish themselves.

How do I overcome this problem. How do I remove what weeds I have and then prepare the soil for the grass and what grasses are there that would be good for a soil with high clay content such is typical to the bendigo region? Any help would be appreciated as my lawn looks like a lost cause with several species of god knows what weed.

Your question is answered reasonably well in the post 'Native Lawn', about 7 posts below yours...
There is also an earlier post that includes a useful website

Here is a link that might be useful: Native grasses
