 o
identification of banksia help please!

We recently visited an ( unfortunately, closed) native plant nursey north of Robe in South Australia and saw a stunning banksia, which I think I have inexpertly identified as banksia ashbyi from the banksia web page. Is there somewhere I can post/email a photo so someone could identify it for me? I'm new here. I'd also like to know if it would grow well where we are on the Mornington Peninsula. We are at least 5 kms from the sea at an elevation of 106 metres, and the land is classed as grassy woodland. Eucalyptus radiata is the main tree species with the odd manna gum. Coastal banksia grow well here. The soil is clay and I don't want to water much (at all!) I'm also looking for a suitable prostrate banksia to grow here. Boobialla and kunzea are also indigenous. All comments gratefully appreciated.

Hello Mistymorn,

I had a look at Alex George's "The Banksia Book" and my guess is it is either the B. pilostylis or the B. ashbyi. It would help if you had a photo of the seed cone - George's illustrations and text appear to indicate the follicles are far more numerous for the B. ashbyi.

Good luck,
Frank

Thank you very much Mistymorn and Frank.. I think I would have trouble growing either here on the Mornington Peninsula as we are in a clay area... I may try though, as the flowers are a stunning shape and colour... Thanks again
