| Acid Drop Vine (Melodorum leichhardii formerly Rauwenhoffia leichhardtii) – Also called Zig Zag Vine. Found in rainforest from NE NSW to NE Qld, NT and NG. A woody climber. Simple alternate glossy dark green leaves with wavy margins. Leaves are honey-secented when crushed – mel is Latin for honey and odor for smell. Paired orange or brown aromatic flowers. Globular range fruits contain 1 to 4 hard brown seeds and can be found from late summer to autumn. Tangy orange flesh in fruits used to make liqueur. Food plant for Pale green triangle and Fourbar swordtail butterflies. This species is part of the same family as the Custard apple. |
