Elkhorn fern Which way up?

Posted by jetak (My Page) on Thu, Aug 20, 09 at 16:57
| I was given an Elkhorn fern, Platycerium bifurcatum of a tree that had to be demolished.
The mass is some 45cm in length with 3 growing eyes at one end.
Which end up do I attach it? The growing end or the dead end ?

| The fronds of these grow at a slight upward angle so that should be enough to tell you which wap it should go. |

Hi jetak, That you have a "growing end" and a "dead end" is a bit accidental, and probably caused by the position of the plant on its original tree. Elkhorns don't really have ends - they just shape themselves around their roots, according to the shape of the space available, so you can't use "ends" as a guide to know which way up it goes. As Greg says, the fertile fronds which grow from the "eyes" tend to grow upwards, so that is your best clue.Good luck, Trish |
