Eucalyptus conundrum

Hello Brainstrust,
I am trying to identify an ailment of an ornamental Eucalypt for a friend. I'm unsure of the species however, the tree has large leaves (similar to Corymbia ptychocarpa). The older leaves are covered with large growths that look very much like large grains of rice. These are easily dislodged to leave a large pinhole in the leaf. The 'rice grains' I dissected didn't show any obvious larvae.
Tree health is suffering and a treasured Paristolochia pravinosa grows through the tree that may be harmed if the Eucalypt is too severely pruned.
Please let me know of any ideas, leads or hunches.

You might find it takes a while for any answers here, the forums are a bit slow.
