Moving a grevillea

OK - I'm dreading a little the answers I might get to this question, but I'll ask anyway!

I have a grevillea arenaria - about 4 ft tall, planted about 2 years ago. Lovely plant.

Thing is, its found itself in the wrong spot in the garden.

In short, I need to move it. I have a second location for it that's similar to the original, so its not shifting drastically from one set of conditions to another.

But what I'm wondering is if there's a hope I can get this plant moved and have it live - and what I can do to give it a real chance of doing so.

Should I prune it a touch before I dig it up? Should I, as I read somewhere, trim any damaged roots underwater? Should I fertilise when I move the plant to the new site?

What can I do to give it the best chance of survival.

Before I would attempt pruning it, I'd see what the soil type is like, as it would suffer far less stress if you could get a good root ball and keep as much soil around the roots, thus avoiding any pruning.

Prune the shrub, and maybe the deeper roots.
The bit that Grevilleas really hate is having the surface and near-surface roots disturbed. Your chances are better if you can get a good wide cut, and don't even disturb the mulch layer. Keep the surface good and moist for a while after the move.
Don't fertilise at all at all!

try and get most of the soil from the original spot and once transplanted water in every 2 days and what grevilla is it native or introduced

Thanks so much for the advice everyone. The plant is a grevillea arenaria which I've grown very attached to - the birds love it and I don't want to lose it I guess.

I'll give this a go in the coming days and let you know how it goes - hopefully it will work out well.

Chris

You could also take some cuttings as back up - just in case the worst happens. Good luck.
