Growth rate of Toona Australis

Hi All,
I recently purchased a small red cedar (6" pot) on the basis that they are 'fast-growing'. Does anyone have any experience with Toona Australis in their garden ? I was assured that it wont reach anythin resembling its rainforest size in the garden, per most species when they no longer have to compete with the canopy - anyone have any exoperience ?

Ta,

Artie

Fairly variable - at my place at 2000ft in SEQ,I have one planted about 18/12 ago in the open which is now about 2.5 metres, one about 4 years ago now 3-3.5 metres. another planted 7 years ago which is about 5-6 metres. Others have been slower. In warmer moister location growth will be quicker.

Artie,
I planted one in Rocky and, as I recall, it grew quite quickly. It was well over 4 metres after 10 years. In the absence of a canopy to force straight growth, it developed quite a number of branches low down and had a broad spread, but, nevertheless, quite an attractive tree for a large garden.

Thanks for the feedback, Tony and Grant - I guess I'll find out for myself when I plant it this weekend :)

Mine's on the escarpment, Toowoomba district, and 6 or 7 metres after 5 years. I did not water it after the first year and we've had a drought.

Artie,

After actually measuring the height today, I make it more like 8m rather than 6 or 7

a tree planted in Cairns grow to about 10m tall in less than 2 years. I watched it grow and grow. It only produced 1 branch so I snapped it off. Last time I saw it, it still hadnt branched, a very tall pole of timber will be produced if the cyclones dont get to it first!
This one was exceptional though.

In Melbourne mine has put on about 30cm a year. But I grow mine in a large pot in the shade.

I have 5 red cedars planted in Melb. (Altona) in 1998. They are now 10-12m high and 25-30cm diam trunks at chest height. Buttressing is developing and the first tree flowered this year. Tried some trees at Trentham-no survivors, Bacchus Marsh-slow growth and sunburn, Tynong Nth-established well (last I heard) and gave a few seedlings to friends in various parts of Melb with mixed results. Most of the trees have a tall straight rainforest like habit. The tree that flowered is more branched.
Cheers Norm
