orange marmelade in trouble

I have had a orange marmelade for at least 2 or 3 years in a pot, and which has been quite healthy, and close to a year ago, had the opportunity to plant into the ground.
It has been doing very well until 2-3 weeks ago, and now a lot of the leaves close to the trunk are dying off, and the outer leaves (particulary the younger ones) are curling, and the general colour of the plant is not a healthy green.
There is a pine tree maybe 8 foot away - could this be leeching the soil? Being the middle of winter, what could I try to save the bush?

Pine trees are able to kill most things that try to grow beneath them. It could be that or it could be that the pH of your soil is alkaline (higher than 7) and grevilleas often don't like that because it results in an iron deficiency which shows as leaves yellowing. Ask a nursery to test your soil - often they will do that for free if you bring in a soil sample - or you can buy a cheap pH test kit from them.

Best of luck,
Frank

Many thanks wacrazy and Frank for your responses.
Although we have a drought problem, we have had some decent rainfall recently, so maybe I have been ignorant because it is the middle of winter, and this plant actually needs some more water, so I am giving this a go. I will also test the pH of the soil this weekend and see if all is ok.
To be honest, I would love to get rid of the Pine tree, and have mostly natives in the garden. One step at a time!!
Thanks again
Julie
