Pruning Eremophila

I have the common red flowered Emu Bush and it is has become really straggly and too big for the spot it's in. Can anyone please advise how much I can take it back without killing it, and also when to do this? It is currently flowering.
Thanks, Heather

Hi Heather,
You probably have Eremophila maculata (red flowered form). These will accept severe pruning. I would not cut beyond leaves ie leave bare wood, although you can do this to this plant. As a general rule pruning is best carried out as the flowering is finishing. As it is a frost hardy plant you will probably get away with pruning now if you must.

I've snapped several eremophilas off at the ground and they've reshot. Just make sure it isn't grafted if you want to do this ;)

Thank you both for your replies. I will give it the chop after flowering now I think.
