Pruning Eremophila

I have the common red flowered Emu Bush and it is has become really straggly and too big for the spot it's in. Can anyone please advise how much I can take it back without killing it, and also when to do this? It is currently flowering.
Thanks, Heather |

Hi Heather, You probably have Eremophila maculata (red flowered form). These will accept severe pruning. I would not cut beyond leaves ie leave bare wood, although you can do this to this plant. As a general rule pruning is best carried out as the flowering is finishing. As it is a frost hardy plant you will probably get away with pruning now if you must. |

| I've snapped several eremophilas off at the ground and they've reshot. Just make sure it isn't grafted if you want to do this ;) |

Thank you both for your replies. I will give it the chop after flowering now I think. Heather |
