For all the Victorian members of the forum, just a reminder that the Australian Garden opens at Cranbourne on 28 May 2006. For those not aware, this is a BRAND NEW 11 hectare Botanic Gardens established on an old sand quarry site within the boundaries of the Cranbourne Botanic Gardens site.

Taken from the advertisement 'The Australian Garden features approximately 100,000 plants, including 1000 trees, in 15 different landscape displays and exhibition gardens'

The Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne is a division of the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne.

Right on my doorstep. Check here ---> www.rbg.vic.gov.au/australian_garden

I saw Gardening Australia did a tour of it on last week's show (20/5) and it looks incredible. Obviously we're all very jealous that you are living so close to it.

I live in Busselton on the other side of the country so I won't be visiting it any time soon.

Well, I made it to the opening of the Australian Garden, only to be confronted with 100's of vehicles parked outside the gardens on surrounding roads and streets. Opting to leave the car at home and walk in the 2km was probably a good move as vehicles that did drive into the gardens were diverted to park at the racetrack next door and walk in from there. The bank up of cars stretching over 200 metres waiting to get to park made me glad I did take the walk in.
Once in the gardens, there was just a sea of people and after a quick walk around looking for and finding family, we decided to leave and come back on a day when it would be quieter as it was very difficult to look at anything without getting a shove from the crowd on every path.
It looks terrific, too bad that some people found it easier to walk over garden beds rather than walk around them, but it was a novelty for a lot that went who probably don't do any gardening at home.
I'll give my opinion in a couple of weeks when we go back again.

I will be really interested to hear what you think of it. What a shame it was a waste of time, but still, at least you know it is worth going back for a proper look.

Doesn't it make you so angry when you see people walking over garden beds like that! You would think that someone who had taken the time to come and view the gardens would know better than that. That's life I guess.

Cheers,
Dee.

Hi Just correas,

I saw the said gardens on Ch. 31 last night. There certainly are a lot of plants worth going to have a look at. It still looks pretty raw and new but I think, given a couple of years, it will really start to take shape. I might not rush down straight away but I will certainly be going to have a look in the future.

Cheers,
Dee.

I'll give it a few years to grow and then it will be at the top of my list of things to see when visiting Victoria.
In time it should become quite a tourist attraction, especially for people from overseas who often ask to see Australian gardens rather than more of what they have at home.

I agree with wattleblossom.
The layout of plants is awesome but the garden will take several years to mature.
