Fountain Grasses

Is anyone in this forum interested in participating in a chain email campaign to raise awareness among the Australian public about environmental/noxious weeds?

I have been doing a little local publicity via flyers etc but an email campaign would reach far more people.

The weed I am currently interested in is Pennisetum setaceum which is listed as a noxious weed in QLD but legally sold in VIC. I see it all over the place in my area.

I reckon it is about time for a grass roots campaign to put a bomb under the backsides of nursery industry, politicians and bureaucrats.

Greg, I've recently noticed Pennisetum setaceum for sale in 2 upper mountains nurseries. In both cases these plants were desplayed in the native plant sections. I think it is concerning enough that these plants (and others) are being sold, but when they are confused with the native Pennisetum alopecuroides, which is not without weed potential either, I foresee a huge problem. I too will do what I can.

I grew the so-called native Pennisetum when I had an Australian garden and it popped up everywhere so I got rid of it. The ABG page seems to recommend it on the webpage for landscaping with the proviso that you remove the seedheads - something that may not happen in either the private garden or amenity plantings. Nice plant but too much of a risk.
You know, generally speaking, the worst 'weed purveyors' are weekend marketeers. Most weedy things are easy to propagate unfortunately and customers recognise them too readily and buy them. I'm talking of ivy, arum lily, agapanthus, pittosporum, watsonia .......... I think you know the rest.

Another menace is being sold on eBay - Dolichos lignosus (advertised as the Australian Pea) Not Australian at all and a shocker if you live on the Mornington Peninsular or the surfcoast of Victoria. I got some labelled Kennedia macrophylla from the then SGAP seedbank during my native days. Soon got rid of it when Irealised the error.

If you give me your email address lomatia I will forward you my weed email.

Will leave a message on ebay about the plant you mentioned and create a weed email for it for later.

I had Pennisetum in my garden, dont know what sp. but it took off all over the place, I got rid of it as I knew it was a potential weed problem. I bought it at the Forestry Comm. at Pennant Hills, in Sydney. This was a few years ago.

Its not native, this one wasnt. Have to be really careful with that one.

Good on ya Greg,

I have heard that a letter was sent to Bunnings from a local conservation orgainsation advising them that they were stocking an invasive weed (Fountain Grass), in less than 24 hours all of these plants were removed from sale in all Bunnings stores accross Adelaide. So campaigning can have an effect. That said, Bunnings are still a company actively involved in reducing biodiversity through decimating old growth forests.............*sigh*

This could be a relevant site for those interested in feral organisms and actions. I read issue 6 of the newsletter; I thought the article on Aconophora placed the issue of its escape in perspective.
Slightly off the track as usual,
Rose
