Planting a tree under a tree

Well, I think my acacia's days are numbered - borers I suspect. I
t has survived a previous attack but isn't looking too flash at the moment. I don't want to remove it till it's well and truly dead, but I'd like to get something up and planted to replace it.
Is it feasible to plant another small tree probably less that a metre from the trunk of a 4 metre acacia?
I'm going to need a really fast grower and VERY dense foliage to about 4 metres. Any suggestions?
I've got a couple of pink phyllanthus nearby and am considering another - might this be suitable for this situation?
All suggestions most welcome.

I have done a similar thing Amelie, with success. The hardest part is digging a reasonable sized hole amongst the roots of the existing tree. Can't comment on phyllanthus..I am not familiar with them. What about another wattle? Good luck,

You can always plant a rainforest tree - they nearly all start life in the shade of another tree. What about a flame tree, firewheel tree, tree waratah, euodia, or if you particularly wanted a yellow-flowering one, a silky oak?

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I was thinking more along the the lillypilly lines - you know, smallish leaves, very dense foliage - (no chance of neighbours catching a glimpse of us but even more importantly, blocking out the sight of them!)
I'm going to give planting under the wattle a try.
