Flowering Gums

Hi all
We have a flowering gum in our backyard which is a terrific little tree.
When it's flowered in the past we've cut the dead flower heads off.
Would it be better to leave them on?
All advice welcome.

Roy

I assume you mean Eucalytpus ficifolia.

If you don't cut them off and allow the rather large capsules to develop and build up, their combined weight can some times cause branches to snap off. So it is not that bad an idea to prune off the spent flowers or to thin out the capsules once in a while.

I have a couple of those grafted Eucalypts (Summer Red etc.) etc., growing on the Central Coast. You can cut them off as Greg has said but I do not bother. The gumnuts look quite attractive on the tree, I reckon. The flowers when wet, weigh more than the fruits, and even more so when a flock of parrots are feeding on them. My trees are about eight years old and have never snapped a branch.

Thanks Robert
I have the grafted Summer Beauty and it's about 4 years old and 2 metres tall.
I'll leave the gumnuts on and see what happens.

I think the gumnuts are certainly a part of the beauty of the tree, leave the dead flowers on there, for sure.
