Angophora costata bark problem

My six year old Angophora's trunk has a strange affliction, which seems to be spreading. it's not the usual quick-growth cracks that occur through the healthy bark, but spreading patches of kind of corky texture brown-coloured bark which then develop lots of cracks. I thought it was the dreaded Armillaria fungus, but an arborist has looked at it and doesn't reckon it is (he wasn't 100% though). Is it normal or fatal? I wanted to see if any of the forum readers knew what it is before forking out for a pathology test.

Hello Fiffi

I would think your arborist is the best person to talk to.

If you had armillaria, I believe you would see fruiting bodies, ie fungi, growing in the soil surrounding the tree. Have a poke around and see if you can find some.

Perhaps a picture might be valuable, for further comment.
