Does anyone have any seedlings of Nothofagus sp - Antartic Beech that grow at Springbrook SEQ which they might like to swap for other SEQ Dry Rainforest/Scrub Forest seedlings? Ring Philip on 0438 261 030 or email to sampai2610@gmail.com

Antartic Beech! Will that grow in sub-tropical south east Queensland? I thought they'd only survive, or at least thrive, in cooler climes,

Funnelweb, there's a short walk from the carpark to the "Best of all lookouts" at the top of Springbrook, high up on the border ranges. Along the walk, there is a well-signposted ancient Antarctic Beech. The micro-climate there is damp and foggy and cold. It is about the wettest area of south-east Qld. It is a remnant tree and probaby has survived through suckering. It's a popular lookout for the tour buses - there is a view to the Gold Coast. Regards,

Well yes! My comment was in 'general' gardening terms but don't expect everyone in that gardening zone/geographical area to grow artic beech or rhododendron or any other cool to temporate climate plants! I don't dispute what you say, that is that such species grow and indeed thrive in such (cool) micro climates. But I live and garden almost diagonally easterly, if a shade south, to that sight, on the coast, and I wouldn't even attempt to grow Arctic Beech or those plants. By the way, you might also find the odd one up on the Glass House Mountains! But below them, forget it.
