Best way to germinate owenia

| A relative has Emu apple growing naturally on their property in south west queensland and would like to try to grow some..are there any special tips in regards to germination as he has been told that they can be very hard to start.Thanks for any help. |

I will also be interested to see what others have to say. I was shown a matched pair of Owenia acidula in a gerden near here. I think they would be the same species you have? They were about 6 years old, 2 metres high, and lovely plants with dense foliage. The proud grower told me that one of the trees was the single result from several bucketfuls of seed which he had treated with laborious care, sandpapering away at the hard seed coat before planting. He believed that the slightest accidental scratch on a seed would prevent it from growing. The other, he told me, he had "passed through a pig". I looked at a local O. acidula, well-laden with ripefruit, just a few weeks ago, and decided that I didn't have it in me to try to germinate them.
