general question about the weather?

| An unexpected business trip to Melbourne is scheduled for August. I'd love to visit botanical gardens but isn't that winter in Australia? I live on the east coast of the U.S and it will be hot and humid then - into the 90's in August here. What's the average temps. in Aug. there? (Farenheit, please? Thanks to all who respond... |

| I don't live in Australia; but from what I've read, by August in Mellbourne you should experience days in the 50s or possibly low 60s and nights in the mid 40s. This is second hand information, not personal experience. I hope it helps. |

Hi Crosscut, Winter temperatures in Melbourne range from 37 degrees F. to 55 deg. F. with and average of 49 deg. F. August is the end of winter, so it may be a little milder than this. Melbourne is renowned for it's changeable weather, so be prepared...bring your sunnies and your umbrella! The Gardens are certainly worth a visit at any time of year! I hope you enjoy you stay in Melbourne, Cheers, Dee. |

Melbourne - Good Grief! Melbourne weather can be dreadful just about any time of the year, but Audust it can be positively appalling. They don't call it the "Manchester of the South" for nothing. Expect windy, bitterly cold, overcast, dull and drizzly. I know I am going to cop some flack for these comments, but I speak from some experience, having lived (existed) there for 2 years before I was able to escape back to Queensland. Grant |

| it's those westerlies grant they cut right through you and whip dirt up off the streets that would near peel paint off of cars. from my memories it is going to be very changable don't know about mild? but to a borne and bred that could be the case and crosscut is coming from summer conditions, winter goes a bit longer in the south and victoria is noted for turning on 4 seasons in any one day. len |

Hey you guys!!! cut it out....we love it down here!! (lol) Seriously though, it is a matter of what you're used to I guess. We don't think it's too bad at all, and we certainly wouldn't choose to live ANYWHERE else! Take my word for it Cindy you CAN have a good time in Melbourne and if it's cold and rainy we have the best choice of restaurants in Australia (uh oh..a whole new can of worms!) Cheers, Dee. |

| Yes, but you don't have the Sydney seafood though do you? I'm not sure if crosscut was suggesting that Melbourne would be covered in snow. I have had the heater on at Christmas down there, but I have never seen it snow at anytime! |

| The Australian Bureau of Meteorology website is superb, you'll find everything you need there. The link will take you straight to a table of Melbourne's climate averages. |

| Oh yes, and they have a nifty temperature converter too... |

| Oh come on, crosscut is coming from maryland, renowned for having drizzle, rain or snow, except when it is hot and sticky :) Melbourne has many wonderful plants flowering in middle winter, such as camelias, epacris and many australian natives. If you are interested I could take you for a trip around to look at something. Email me off list (email on njhurst.org). |
