Planting a hedge in Canberra - plants & preparation?

hi, I'm wanting to erect a 20m length of informal native north facing hedge, 1-2m high, underneath two mature Chinese Elm street trees (which let a fair amount of sun through).

I'm halfway through digging a 1m wide x 0.5m deep trench in quite heavy clay - its slow work! I've got 10 x 25l bags of cow manure and 1 x 25l bag of gypsum that I'm going to mix with the soil when I get to the point of refilling. I've got some liquid groundbreaker to put in the bottom of the trench before I start filling.

So far I've got 3 x 3 plants: Westringia-Fruiticosa; Calistemon Captain Cook; and Lasiopetaulum Bauera. Am looking for 3 more. Options I was going to choose from: Hakea Eriantha, Westringia Glabra, Correa Glabra, Gravillea Victoriae, & Melaleuca Decussata. Was looking at buying from Australian Plant Sale at Yarralumla nursery which I think is happening this Saturday 7 April.

Does anyone have any suggestions about preparation or species choice?

RE: Planting a hedge in Canberra - plants & preparation

I've done the soil improving thing a couple of times. First time was a single new plant that was struggling and I'd only just started to learn about gardening so I dug it out, "improved" the hole and stuck it back in. Bad idea. The hole worked like a sump. A few years later I planted a hedge and this time I dug a trench but also built up a mound. Don't know how it went long-term but the plants were doing really well at the time we sold the house.

What plants did you get?
