When will my Grevillea 'Ned Kelly' start flowering?

| I planted it in October last year and it is growing really well. It has really bushed up and there is new growth all over it.
Just wondering how long will it take to flower. I have read that Ned Kelly flowers throughout the year but was wondering how long it will take to get established before I see my first flower. |

| Well, that's only 4 or 5 months ago, might be a bit young yet. If it's growing well I'd be a bit more patient, however, you could look now (early March) to see if it is developing flower stems, they're easy to recognise, and it should have a few depending on how big/mature the plant was when you planted it. Mine are all budding up, though a few, such as cooroura cascade, are just finishing flowering. If it's going ok I'd expect you should see flowers this autumn-cum-winter/spring. |

| Still nothing :( It's putting all it's energy into growing new leaves instead of flowers. Oh well, maybe next year. It's quite a good size now, though - perhaps 1 metre high and almost as wide. |

| Still no flowers. My other three grevilleas are starting to flower, though. Woolly Grevillea is in the ground, planted the same time as Ned Kelly and that's just starting to flower. My other two are in pots and they are starting to flower. Oh well, hopefully next year. |

| They actually flower all year round, but from memory I think they take a year or two to start flowering. Did you plant it with a bit of native fertiliser, plus mulch the soil? It is a QLD hybrid, so would need a bit more moisture with good drainage. If you have hard clay, perhaps that might need to be improved. |

| Yes, I used native fertiliser when it was planted and have also used mulch. Our soil isn't wonderful but I have also used a wetting agent and clay breaker. |

| It would seem that we have had the opposite experience. I grew 4 from clippings taken in February and 3 of them are already flowering, even though they are no more than 15cm high! I've even considered snipping the flowers off to give the plants more time to develop leaves. One possibility that springs to mind is that yours could be planted in high nitrogen soil, which would encourage leaf growth. Another, what about light availability? If they aren't in direct sun that could inhibit flowering. |

| Everything's great. My grevillea is about to burst into flower. At last count, there was about 20 flowers. In fact, all our grevilleas are in flower right now...yay!!! |
