Help with Syzygium propagation

Posted by Beebs QLD Aust (My Page) on

I will be moving house in a month or so and want to propagate my Syzygium before I leave (they are so gorgeous), and thought I'd ask all you knowledgeable gardeners out there!! The tags said they were australis sp. They have some flowers and berries on them at present. I live in Brisbane. Here are my questions:

Should I take cuttings or plant the berries or both?
With regard to berries, should I wait until they fall off before they are ready to plant?
If planting the seeds, should they be "pre-treated" ie scarified, pour boiling water over them, remove the fleshy bit etc.
What should I plant them in and what are their water requirements?
With cuttings, I read that I need to take "soft tip cuttings" - what does that mean exactly?
What should I pot the cuttings in, should I use rooting mix and what sort of water requirements do they have?

Sorry there are so many questions! I tried to find answers on the net but got a bit confused. Let me know if there are any good web-sites/books/people to contact.

Many thanks

ps I noticed on the forum some people mentioning they watered their "lillypillies". I've never watered my Syzygium and they seem just fine (even with not much rain in Brisbane)! I am moving to tank water and wanted to take some plants with me because they seemed to not need much water - have I just got lucky or can you get away without watering them?

I would say that even though you have not had much rain, the humidity will tend not to dry the soil out. If you have a string of very hot days, they may need some water, but just play it by ear. I have some syzygiums in tubs in near full sun, without too much extra watering and they are OK. As for your propagation questions, hopefully someone else can help.

Someone has answered my questions in another forum! Thanks.
