I am thinking of planting nothofagus cunninghamii at the base of my Garden in Melbourne which backs onto a creek. We however have a massive Possum problem; they have already killed numerous native & non native species. - does anyone now how nothofagus cunninghamii handle possums?

RE: nothofagus cunninghamii

Hi Andy,

Nothofagus cunninghamii, while not being particularly renound as a possum's delight, is a very very slow growing and long-lived tree (1000 years in its natural habitat). This means that even a series of a few possum attacks throughout the space of year will severely affect the tree.

Possums are becoming more and more of a problem with the drought the way it is currently. So much dryness has pushed the poor old possums to dessimate their regular trees, and also discover tastes for trees they otherwise would not have touched.

You can try protecting the tree, but this is often difficult as possums are much more wiley than people give them credit for!

Good luck!

Jim
