I have seen on a tree growing down the road, a shoot that is very dense. Insted of growing in long needle things its like its growing at ever internode. Its very bushy and slow growing. How would i propagate it?? I'll try to get a pic and more info.

John

John

How about you snip off a few shoots and stick them in some propagating mix, and see if they shoot. Try sticking a few in water and see if some roots develop.

Hi John

What you saw is probably a "Witches Broom". Usually but not exclusively found on conifers. They are the source of many of the dwarf conifers we see today. Generally there are the result of an infection causing the development of tumorous grtowth.

Funny I saw my first witches broom on a casuarina yesterday!! If you can rescue it you will produce something special that will be of considerable value gardeners.

To rescue it the usual system is to aerial layer it and then when roots are formed remove it from the parent tree. Grow it on. To increase the numbers take cuttings - they will usually grow the same.

Generally Bonsaiists are very interested in withches brooms as they make great potential bonsais.

regards

Dennis Mc
