| Hi John What you saw is probably a "Witches Broom". Usually but not exclusively found on conifers. They are the source of many of the dwarf conifers we see today. Generally there are the result of an infection causing the development of tumorous grtowth. Funny I saw my first witches broom on a casuarina yesterday!! If you can rescue it you will produce something special that will be of considerable value gardeners. To rescue it the usual system is to aerial layer it and then when roots are formed remove it from the parent tree. Grow it on. To increase the numbers take cuttings - they will usually grow the same. Generally Bonsaiists are very interested in withches brooms as they make great potential bonsais. regards Dennis Mc |
