Does anyone have a mature Quandong ?

| Hi All,
I may have mentioned previously that I am keeping a Blue Quandong (Elaeocarpus Grandis) constrained in a large pot, as I fear that it will be far too big for my <700 sq m block. My nurseryman assured me that they only become huge in their rainforest habitat, but I remain sceptical.
The problem is that it's outgrowing its pot - should I take a chance and plant it ?
Thanks,
Artie |

| Hi Artie, this may be of help neighbours have Grevillea robusta ( Silky oak ) planted each side of both my boundary fences, they grow 30mts in the wild and are about 15mts and causing all kind of trouble to the fence posts, branches snapping of and our block is 2800 sq mt. I have planted Flindersia brayleyana ( Qld maple ) on my block now the label states that they grow to 15- 25mts in the rainforest and 8-12mts in a garden and I find this to be true so your tree will grow 35mts in the rainforest and probably half that size in a garden thats 17mts ( 55ft ) do you think your block can cope with a tree that big. My answer would be no, and I would go back to that nursery and ask them just how tall it grows in a small garden, it ok for them to say that, anything for a sale. But then you may have some answers that disagree with me, so wait till everyone has answered your post. Hope this helps......MM |

| I have used E.grandis for rainforest revegetation when I lived in Brisbane. The specimens I planted are around 20 years old now and are huge. They WILL grow large even in a suburban back yard, I love them but personally would not plant them unless I had acreage. Andrew. |

Artie, I planted two in my garden when I lived in Rocky many years ago. They are now about 20 years old and are large, but not monsterous trees. For the 10 years we lived there they grew from pot size to about 4 metres - quite manageable. You can see them (provided the new owner has not taken it into his head to destroy them as he did many of my plants) in Frenchville Road, three houses past Davey Avenue on the left. Grant |

| Thanks for the feedback everyone - it confirms that which I suspected. I will place an ad in our classifieds to see if I can find it a good home. Lets hope it doesnt prove too difficult to give away. |

Artie I'd be happy to take it off your hands if its not too difficult to get it to the Gold Coast Hinterland. Where are you exactly? Tony |

| Thanks for the offer, Tony, but a 10 hour drive from the Gold Coast to Rocky to pick up a tree thats already 2 metres tall doesnt seem like a worthwhile proposition. I'll place it in our electronic classifieds - thanks for reminding me. |
