My magnificent 35m spotted gum has split about 10m up from the ground in today's storms in sydney. At least the top 25m will need to go. If a 10m stump is left will it shoot?

Yes, it will reshoot, thats a mighty big tree. What a shame it was damaged.

Be careful. Your Eucalypt will probably reshoot and quite quickly however it will have a higher risk of dropping branches after this sort of treatment. Consider what is below it.

I agree with Danili. The union between the new shoot and the stump will always be weaker than a normal trunk. If it was me I would plant another.

Eucalyptus maculata is now in the Genera of Corymbia! And yes, epicormic shooting will result, but as the tree has already undergone stress, perhaps replanting would be advisable. Or cut the stump to 30cm and let it coppice!

I disagree with the statements about having to fell the tree due to such misfortune. While there will be a union where the new growth will appear, soon, it will re/unite with it's characteristic form. Such a big tree will get to that point much faster, the speed and strenght of the healing and conforming process is faster and very effective3 in larger trees.
In about 5 years, you will not be able to easily discern the area of the split. Cut all the splintered area off, and soon your tree will be strong.
Please, do not fell this tree, that would be totally unnecesary.
