Drooping Syzygium ‘Aussie Southern’

Posted by jazzy_grower QLD (My Page) on

I have several Syzygium ‘Aussie Southern’s that I just planted on Boxing Day. A few of them- well, their leaders, have started to droop. The rest of the plant looks fine though. Any diagnoses? Could they have been overwatered due to the deluges we've been blessed with recently in Brisbane?

Also, any advice on when I should start to tip prune new lilly pillys? I'm a novice grower.

Thanks!

RE: Drooping Syzygium ‘Aussie Southern’

Hi Jazzy,

If the species you have is Syzygium leuhmannii (do a google image search to find out), it's likely drooping due to the abundant rain you've been having in Brisbane recently. It's a bit of a finicky tree down Melbourne way as it doesn't cope well with compaction or waterlogging, but I know that it is used extensively as a public landscape tree in QLD as I grew up in Brisbane am remember seeing them everywhere!

Other species you may have might be S. australe.

You should tip prune them at the beginning of winter ideally, but they'll respond well to it any time at all.

How big is the plant at the moment?
