Can anyone provide the full botanical name including the author's name for the Coolabah tree? You know, the one the swagman sat under. I cannot seem to locate the name on the internet. I know that it doesn't survive here on the east coast of the US, but I have a large greenhouse available and would like to know how the swagman felt when sat in it's shade.

There is the usual problem with common names...
Coolabah / Coolibah brings up the following in the ANBG's common names database:

Eucalyptus intertexta
Eucalyptus microtheca (Eucalyptus coolabah)
Eucalyptus orgadophila

My guess is that our suicidal swagman was in fact under a Eucalyptus microtheca F.Muell., full taxonomy details of which can be found in the ANBG databases, link below. The naming of this species has been played with a bit.

I agree with Dan. Everything I've ever read in relation to the poem or the name 'Coolibah' has referred to Eucalyptus microtheca.
Cheers,
Dee.

There has been a recent revision of microtheca by Hill and Johnson. The species up Longreach way, where the swagman was meant to have taken the plunge, is now E. coolabah ssp arida.

This was also posted on the Botany forum and I posted an answer, essentially agreeing with gonow but rather more detailed - see link.
