| Hi fleaseyelash, Malle is right, the seeds can take a long time to germinate, and viable seed per gram may not be ideal. In regards to set up you have, a lamp really isn't necessary as seeds for Xanthorrhoea sp. don't need light to germinate. You can notably increase your rate of germination with Xanthorrhoea sp. by using some form of smoke treatment. If you go to a nursery specialising in Aust. natives (possibly where you got the seed from), they should have 'seed starter' additives you can add to your seeds when sowing to increase your germination rate. These starter granules are usually horticulural grade vermiculite that has been treated with smoke water. If you can get actual smoke water, soak your seed over night before sowing. Bottom heat is more useful for seed germination rather than a lamp on top. You can buy specially designed mini propagation houses with heat pads (usually about $50 AUS), or if you have a water heater with a flat top, you can place your seed tray/containers on top of this and achieve the same effect. I recently germinated Xanthorrhoea preissii using the top of water heater method, it took 3 months to germinate. Good luck! |
