sick hardenbergia

Have a blue and a white hardenbergia planted on a sunny bank in the Blue Mountains, both formerly healthy. In recent months, the white one has become a total mess - with yellowing leaves (greener around veins), scabby loooking dead spots and a lot of distorted leaves. I don't think it is actually going to cark any time soon but it is horrible to look at. What is wrong with it and what can I do to fix it?

Sounds like it could have been poisoned in some way, is this a possibility, any nearby chemicals used. Or over fertilized.

I don't see how, Popi. It's surrounded by other natives, none of which are affected. I'm not using chemicals (or fertilisers in that area), there is scrub to one side, a steep bank down to the un-kerbed, wild-plant-filled gutter and a long gap before the neghbour on the other side. My problem is I can recognise fungal diseases, insect attacks etc on exotics but I don't know what they look like on natives.

I don't know much about plant diseases, but if you spray some pyrethrum on it once, it might just knock out the pest. It seems to work OK for me. Don't spray too much, because I don't think natives are too thrilled about being sprayed.

Hi Mery

Hmmm, how about you try removing all the scabby leaves, they may contain the insect. Is there any webbing? Any leaves around the bottom of the plant on the soil? Remove those as well, could be a haven for breading insects.

You could try a bit of native fertiliser, the one that you add to water and spray on the leaves, yellowing leaves suggests a nutrient deficiency. I have had a lot of success with this.

Sounds like you could have two problems with your plant.

I would try pruning it back savagely and allowing it to build up some fresh new growth. I have pruned a mini ha ha Hardenbergia back to the stump and it is coming back quite nicely.
