Waratah in Brisbane

| I was wondering if anyone has any experience in growing Waratahs in SE QLD.
I live in Brisbane and I might be daring enough to try it.
I have mounded the garden with well drained "native" soil from a landscape place and am thinking about mixing some sand in as well. I have read about the best growing conditions for a Waratah (Telopea speciosissima) but would like to know if anyone has practical experience.
The area I may plnat in is semi shaded but is only 1.5m x 1.5m. This maybe too small?
Any comments? |

| Telope Speciosissima are notoriously difficult to grow. They are local to may area, and I have failed at 2 attempts. The hybrids however (and there are many of these) are a lot easier to grow. Some of them look very much like the Speciosissima, so you might want to grow one of these also in case the real thing carks it. |

| I'm in west Tweed Heads and the only one I've managed to grow is T Speciosissima x mangaensis 'Corroboree'. It's been in for about 4 years and is thriving on a well drained sloping site on acidic, red volcanic soil, where each year it flowers prolifically. After flowering I cut it back by a third to a half and it again powers away. As for others though, including the white one, all have failed time and time again. Try corroboree, it's a toughy and a good flowerer. |
