 o
compost

hi,
i am currently trying to improve the soil of my established garden, using compost.
i read everywhere to dig the compost in, this is of course difficult and quite likely detrimental for the garden given possible root damage.
is the idea to simply put the compost on top of the soil?

any suggestions welcome

cheers, jan

RE: compost

g'day jan,

yeh put it on top of the medium spread around among the plants then cover it generously with mulch say spoilt lucern hay or any fodder hay will do, and let the worms go to work too easy hey?

RE: compost

Len has pretty well said it all. Distributing compost around the root zone will eventually benefit the plant. Watering will wash nutrients, as well as the other goodies from the compost into the root area.

I tend to think that worms, whilst doing lots of good, do not move as much stuff around as we think. Soil profiles do not change an enormous amount from worm activity.
