Parsley

I am not quite sure what I'm doing wrong. I have always had no trouble growing parsley but these days it seems to bolt prematurely. I used to have a plant for a year and now I'm lucky to have it a couple of months. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers, Dee.

RE: Parsley

There are some very naughty nursery-people out there who start off plants, get them to seedling stage, then feed them with growth retardant until shortly before they wish to sell the plants. Hence, instead of getting a true seedling a few months old, what you're getting is a year old or older plant which has been kept at baby size. So, when you transplant it, it bolts. Parsley isn't really a plant that likes being transplanted anyway. Most plants with taproots have a similar dislike. Sometimes it will bolt just to spite you for disturbing it! A stressed plant will often bolt. If you've have sudden extreme changes in temperature or if it's been allowed to dry out and then it's been flooded, or similar drastic changes, it will express it's disapproval of such treatment.

Thanks for the reply Daisyduckworth. I think my problem has problem arisen from transplanting them. I never buy ready to go parsley, I always let my own go to seed. Unfortunately, they don't always come up where I want them to grow, so hence they get transplanted. From now on I will let the parsley dictate where it wants to grow and see if I can make them last longer....Cheers, Dee.
