Pineapple Sage (again)

well it's been a couple months I guess since I planted my little nursery plant into a large tub - good potting mix and ... water saving granules underneath. While the plant has grown ..and a few flower stems, the leaves certainly don't have the pungent pineapple aroma as when firstly purchased. Does this mean it's on it's way out...since everyone talks about being able to smell them from so far away and I can barely smell it at all when I crush the leaves now. It is in a sunny position.

Ever walked into a really smelly place, and noticed that after a while you don't notice the smell? Noses adjust, and maybe that's what's happened to you. If its any consolation, my pineapple sage, (which is powering on, almost constantly in flower and very healthy, needs hacking back every few weeks, and is and several years old) hardly has any perfume - to me anyway, though others notice it. I don't think you're doing anything wrong. I think it's just the nature of the beast.

I'd add that pineapple sage seems to be more fragrant around flowering time.

Carole - plants make essential oils to protect themselves from pests, no other reason! The more tortured and unhappy they are the more of the stuff they make! As much as people might like to think so, essential oils are not there for our enjoyment. They are supposed to be toxic and make them unattractive! Your pineapple sage might be putting on too much soft new growth and the leaves have to mature and toughen up before they develop their full aroma? Also I've noticed if you crush the leaves they smell quite unpleasant, where as gently brushing the leaves releases the pineapple smell without the rank planty smell.

Thanks everyone for your input. I guess it's a matter of ...time will tell and I'll try to remember to put a note here to report of changes.
