What different basils are people growing this summer? What are some of your favourites? I recently aquired an east indian clove basil which is growing brilliantly. It's hands down my favourite.

I'm afraid I've gone a little overboard with basil this season. I have two varieties of lemon basil (Sweet Danni & Mrs Burns), Fino Verde and Genovese, Yiotis and Blue Spice (both from Kings), a purple leafed variety (no idea of the name as it was part of the Gourmet Blend of Yates), Thai basil, also various basils from the aforementioned Gourmet Blends of Yates and Kings. As well I also have the East Indian basil and the one called Fever Plant or West Indian Basil (O. viride gratissum).

Anna - what is the scent/flavour of the west indian basil like compared with east indian? Is it distinct? Do you have a favourite?

Jamus, the West Indian Basil has a distinct thyme scent and flavour. You couldn't really compare it with the East Indian in scent or flavour which, as you know, is very clove-y. These two are definitely perennial. Do you mean which I prefer of these two or of any basil? As each of the above have completely different and distinctive scents there is no real comparison and I guess I would have to say that I simply like them both.

I have a perennial basil which I think is Ocimum sanctum. It does very well in a hot dry spot in the garden. I alternate between liking the scent of this plant and not liking it. I think it's scent actually changes with the time of day or climatic factors perhaps? Sometimes it has a definite musky rankness about it, other times it's quite sweet and Ocimum basilicum like.
