Basil wilt

| I am in the Sydney region and my basil is suffering from a disease which after some research, I have concluded is probably Fusarium wilt (oxysporum f. sp. basilicum). Here is an american reference for this disease - - my plants look exactly like the pictures on this site.
The plants grow to about 15-20 cm tall and then gradually start dying. Symptoms include wilting of the tips, whole leaves dropping off and blackening of the tips and stems. Cross section of the stems shows blackish dis-colouration of the vascular tissue. There are no signs of insect infestation or insect damage, nor does the disease respond to pyrethrum or other insect sprays.
It seems that the Fusarium fungus is not easy (or even possible) to eradicate. Does anyone know if there are fusarium resistant plants available in Australia?
cheers,
Tony |

| tony i dont about fusarium resistant plants but this virus is in the soil so if you grow them in pots in potting mix you shouldnt have problems and they grow happily in pots.basil are tough plants and it could be a case of too much water causing a rot or fungus too. |

| If it is Fusarium Wilt, there are FW resistant or tolerant Basils around. Some will do better than yours are doing and die eventually. My best Basil "Siam Queen" will grow to about 1/2 metre and nipping the tips gives a lot of leaves. But if the plant is harvested it will not regrow. So the best tactic is to nip tips and wait till the plant is about to flower (start to get some is how I tell) Rip the whole plant out. The leaves can be dried or vacuum packed and frozen. Some people mince it mix with water and freeze in an ice cube maker. While growing some leaf can be removed for cooking but not to much at a time. As to finding a FW resistant variety; google "Genovese Sweet basil" open page headed Have; Fusarium resistant Genovese Sweet Basil. It's the first entry at the time of this post. Problem is getting the one you want of course. Keep trying. I'm trying to cross polinate my desirable plants with desirable with an FW tolerant Basil that grows like a weed here. Good luck - Al |
