Using neem

I hope this topic is not out of place on this forum but I can't seem to find any information elsewhere. I have a flourishing neem tree and I would like to utilise it instead of buying neem oil. Has anyone had success doing this? I spread a few leaves in the chook house to keep mites etc at bay but would like to make something I can spray on my plants.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I'm not speaking from personal experience, since I don't have a neem tree (lucky you!), but I guess you could always try making a spray from the leaves - by infusing them in water.

Or you could dry the bark or leaves and put them through your food processor to make a dusting powder.

Pretty much as Daisyduckworth said, you infuse the leaves. This is a recipe I found that is supposedly used by farmers in India.

1Kg fresh leaves
5 litres water.
Boil until leaves are no longer green. Cool overnight. Filter through fine cloth. Use as a spray for almost any insects.
If you find that it is not strong enough, it is suggested using 2kg of leaves to 5 lt water.

Hope this works!!
Cheers,
Dee.

I just did a bit more reading-up, and discovered that the parts used to make the commercial insecticidal oil is the seeds! The oil is extracted from the seeds.

That complicates things a bit, doesn't it?

The beauty of using the leaves is that they are available all year round. I still reckon it's worth a try. After all, what have you got to lose?
Cheers,
Dee.
