Help - something is eating my sage

Posted by Trucie (My Page) on

Hi

I am a newbie to gardening and this forum (Hello all!) and have just started a herb container garden. My basil/marjoram/thyme/oregano herbs are all doing very well but something is eating away all the leaves of the sage plant. I can't see anything apart a few very small ants in the pot.

Can anyone please offer me some advice?
Thanks
Trucie

Check the plant thoroughly, a leaf by leaf inspection, underside too and also in the surface soil around the plant. Could be grubs, slugs, snails maybe even slaters. Actually, if you want to catch the culprit go out at night with a torch. Many leaf munchers are nocturnal and hide during the day.

Thanks Ray

I'll give it a try tonight with a glass of wine! Someone told me maybe putting some garlic leaves around the sage might help. I am trying to be organic so hopefully i don't have to use any pesticides.

I had a similar issue with holes being munched in the leaves of my potted basil and pineapple sage. After coming home late one night I found a lot of insects with massive pincers on their bottoms swarming on these two plants (but none of the other plants, which include mints, oregano, the usual sage, a chili and various other things). I haven't yet worked out how to deter them (as I do not want to use nasty chemicals on my babies), so I bring the pots inside for the night.

Any suggestions?

I think the culprit is fermentation flies/bugs? the ones that hang around fruits? Any idea how to get rid of these... I have been told soap and water but I am not sure? Thanks.

A rat came onto my deck and ate only the sage, left the oregano, parsley, basil, catnip, etc.
When the sage was gone he never came back.
