| I think you are referring to Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana), also called Sweet Herb of Paraguay, which can be used to sweeten foods and drinks. It is not, however, a substitute for sugar when making confectionery - it does not dissolve, or turn into a syrup like sugar. It is readily available at many plant nurseries, but especially herb nurseries. Any nursery should be able to order a plant in for you. You might even find it at a plant stall at your local weekend markets. Take a trip to Mt Tambourine one weekend to the markets there! Or another down to the North Coast of NSW - Byron Bay, Nimbin and neighbouring towns are places certain to have it in abundance. For more information, check out some of the threads posted on the Herbs Forum over time. Link below. I'm in Brisbane, and it grows very well here. It usually dies back in winter, especially if allowed to flower, but always pops back in spring - quite early. |
