Basil is bad.........

for me anyway.

I have bought two plants and both have died. I can't seem to keep it alive and I am frustrated because it is my favourite herb to use.

I have put it with the other herbs in a pot in full sun from morning onwards and watered it also. Every other hern is blooming and running rampant, but the basil just starts to wilt, shrivel and die!!!!!

What am I doing wrong!!

I think it's been a bit cold lately for basil. I've planted 2 lots and they've damped off. I've put some more seeds in and they seem to be OK. If it's cold it's better to keep them on the dry side. Now that the weather is finally warming up you might do better. Put them in the sunniest and warmest part of your garden.

Thanks. I even out the last plant in the kitchen windowsill. I know it doesn't get full sun there but thought it was warm and frost free but to no avail.

Make a little tent, covered with clear plastic, and cover the plants, pot and all, with it, so that the plastic does not touch the leaves. It will keep moisture in, and create a nice little hothouse for your plants. If you have other herbs in the same pot, they'll be competing for water and nutrients, and it seems like they're winning. Keep the basil on its own - it's a greedy plant.

Yes, DD's advice is very good. Use some old cow manure, too. And try growing basil from seed instead of buying those forced sappy seedlings. The self-sewn plants are way stronger.

Daisyduckworth is onto a good idea with the "tent"....another good thing is if you have any old windows laying around, you can prop them up against a sunny wall for the hothouse function. if you have two windows of the same size, put a hinge at the top of them, and then it can be folded out into an a-frame and can be put whereever u need it
