Curry Plant

While I have a small plant growing (from a cutting) I've no idea how it is best used. Do I use the fresh leaves in a curry recipe OR dry the leaves for adding to a recipe? Does it usually impart a strong curry flavour or would you normally add your normal curry spices AND the curry leaves? Thanks in advance.

There was a similar question some time ago. The curry plant, which is a native of the Mediterranean region, can be used wherever Sage is used. As far as I know it is not used in curries (unlike the Curry Leaf Tree) and anyway, it's flavour is so mild as to be virtually unnoticeable once added to anything.

IMO curry plant is a pretty addition to any garden. Aside from that, it's pretty useless as a herb. When cooked, the flavour is so mild as to be bland or just nothing. If you want curry flavour, use the leaves of the Curry Leaf Tree, Murraya koenigii. Even that is not a true substitute for curry, which is a blend of many different herbs and spices.

Thankyou both for your contributions - at least I know now to keep it for its fine grey foliage and leave it out of the kitchen.

I've got the minature version and the normal version of curry plant and I find that when I pluck some of the mini version and stir it through my cheese sauce it does leave a very faint curry taste. Just perfect for my cheese sauce anyway. The mini version is also rather more silvery grey, denser and has a stronger smell than the normal version I've noticed. Also grows heaps faster.

Making curry is easy. Grab yourself a copy of Charmaine Solomon's - The Complete Asian Cookbook and start experimenting! That's what we did 5 years ago and now we have almost 100 different spices in the cupboard. ps. Don't eat Curry plant.

Jamus thankyou for the recipe book detail. I do love making curries - but mostly shortcut with the Pataks products - all there in a jar to add to my meat and veges'.
