Gill, The top herb for treating migraine is feverfew, which tastes repulsive but reputedly works, I'll attach a link below to a scientific article regarding it's use in treating migraine. I know something about this, my step mum suffers badly, the symptoms you describe. She's done LOTS of research into it and it's probably a genetic condition with no cure at this point in time. It's hereditary, runs in families and sufferers usually have it for life, beginning in late teens or early 20s. There are some suggestions that some foods can trigger it, my step mum avoided foods high in salicylates and that did reduce the frequency of attacks. The cause of migraine isn't fully understood, but it's completely unrelated to "stress headaches" that most people get from time to time.

Here is a link that might be useful: Feverfew for preventing migraine

RE: Herbs for migraine??????

Hi Gill

I get a migraine every couple of months and have some feverfew plants. I once told someone that I tried eating the leaves and spat them out, and she scoffed at me and said I should infuse some leaves and drink it like a herbal tea. I haven't tried that yet but it's probably worth looking at both approaches to see if either works for you.

There's also been some research into caffeine assisting the cessation of a migraine at its onset. It seems to help me if I have a bottle of one of those fizzy energy drinks and follow up with two aspirin (not on an empty stomach)as soon as I feel the start of a migraine. Then follow up with aspirin every 2-3 hours and sometimes an ice pack on the back of my head to help reduce swelling of the blood vessels in the brain.

Hope this helps and good luck
Nicole

RE: Herbs for migraine??????

I am a big herb lover but when it comes to migraines, which I get 2-3 x a month, I would not trade my Maxalt pills. The kind I take dissolve instantly and if taken at the first sign of a migraine will stop it in it's tracks.

If there is an herbal remedy that is equally effective I would like to know about it!
