Parsley

I planted some parsley mid last summer, just the curly leaf variety, and it's still doing amazingly well. I've harvested bags of the stuff and kept a couple of neighbours happy all through winter. And all from just a handful of plants. I expect it will run to seed eventually but until then, tabbouleh (spelling?) is a weekly fixture.

Great stuff, Ray. I've been on the continental train for a while, but in the last few weeks my plants bolted. I will let a few go to seed and see what happens. Might grow some curly alongside, too.

yes Raymondo - parsley doing well here too - I chopped a lot up and added a little water, put into ice-cubes. When set, store in plastic bag or container - just handy to toss into a casserole or soup in the making when you don't happen to have parsley available - or you've forgotten to bring any inside at the end of the day for the meal ahead.

RE: Parsley

Do any of you know how to collect the seed? My italian/continental parsley is about to go to seed and I want to put it in a different patch next year otherwise I would just let it self seed where it is. Do I tie a paper bag around the seed heads to collect the seed or is there another way?
Thanks
Eve

RE: Parsley

Eve, just leave them on the plant until they look dry and brown and fall off easily in your hand. Strip the seed off the umbels and leave it inside in a bowl for a couple of days to make sure it's dry before storing it in a paper bag or an air tight jar. If you pick one up and press it with your thumbnail it should be hard and not squish. Write the date on it because after a few years they will probably start to lose viability.

Thank you Jamus. I will hopefully have more parsley next year. I am new to seed saving and hope to save a few seeds of the heirloom vegies for next year too. :)

I have been told that it is difficult to germinate parsley seeds?

Not so difficult Meggs. Just takes a long time. As long as you keep it watered and have patience it will grow eventually. I don't think it has a long viability though so the fresher the better.
