Chives

I am trying to grow chives from seed. They come up no worries, it is getting them to the stage that I could use them in cooking, that is the problem. Is there any special thing I need to do to get them 'bigger?' Also how long will it take for them to reach maturity?
Thanks daisy |

| Chives take 70-90 days to be ready for harvesting, at an minimum temperature of 20C (ie soil temp). Why not start harvesting them in small quantities while they are still small? Regular cutting helps keep plants vigorous and healthy and encourages spreading. The clumps should be cut with a sharp knife often, even if they aren't wanted for use, in order to maintain a regular supply of fresh, young leaves. |

| Down here in Adelaide Chives are really only vigorous evough to be worth harvesting in their second year. Of course every year after that they are stronger and more numerous. Very hardy little plant, but need time to get established. |
