| Brahmi (Bacopa monniera), also called Water Hyssop: Aerial parts are used to treat nervous system disorders such as neuralgia, epilepsy and mental illness, and a wide range of other conditions including indigestion, ulcers, constipation, asthma and bronchitis, even infertility. The expressed juice mixed with oil is used as a rub for arthritic pain. May be useful in improving mental function, memory and concentration and reduces learning time. Shows potent anti-tumour and anti-cancer activity. Usual Dosage: 40mg per kg of body weight per day of tincture or extract. You can use it as a tea - for a 10yo, give about half a cup per day, or as advised by a qualified herbalist. Please note: Pennywort, sometimes called Gotu Kola (Centella asiata, or Hydrocotyle asiata) is also sometimes called Brahmi. It's also used to improve brain function, but is most commonly used for arthritis and other problems of aging. Sometimes labelled as Arthritis Plant. For adults, 2-3 leaves are recommended to be eaten per day, or used to make a tea. Most specialist herb nurseries should have it, though you may have to get it ordered in. However, Bacopa is often sold as an aquarium plant, so hunt for it in your local pet shop! I grow mine in a pot, and I keep it very moist. Please be careful with it though. If allowed to get into our waterways, it is very destructive to our environment. Both herbs mentioned here are readily available in tablet form. Check the label for correct botanical name if the bottles are labelled 'Brahmi'. Most often, brahmi is called 'Bacopa'. |
