Since when was Stevia a prohibited plant?? There is a branch of Richters somewhere near Perth, and they will probably stock stevia and will probably use their mail-order service to get it to you. Sorry, I don't have more details. Also, most nurseries should be able to order one in for you on request, particularly specialist herb nurseries. In case you can't get the plant, you can find dried stevia in almost any health-food store.

I have been told by nerseries where I have tried to orde stevia in WA that it cannot be brought into WA as it is a restricted plant here. What is Richters? cheers

Richters is a Canadian (I think) herb wholesaler. They sell large quantities of live plants or seeds to nurseries and individuals world-wide, and many branches. They have a web-site, of course, with a huge catalogue. If nurseries say stevia is a restricted plant in WA, then you won't be able to get it at all. Why not double-check with the govt. agricultural authority in WA - they'll also have a web site, so search for 'restricted plants Western Australia' and see if it's on their list. I know WA is incredibly strict about such things, and with good reason. I can't think of any reason for stevia, except that its seeds are easily wind-blown and might be considered a threat to local flora ( though since it has such a low seed viability rate, there has to be another reason, surely). Get the dried stuff if you can. I don't recommend you to flout the quarantine/import restriction laws. It could be very expensive.

Why not check with your DoA? A quick email should verify whether or not it is restricted.

If you do find that you can grow Stevia in WA, the Australian agents for Richters are Eschol Springs Nursery, PO Box 61, Gingin.

I think I read somewhere about Stevia being prone to weediness. Should those growing it be vigilant?

stevia is available from diggers. I think they mail order to WA
RE: Stevia

You can get Stevia from online Herb sellers, but unfortunatley unless they are from Western Australia they won't be able to send it to WA easily. These people send it to every state except TAS and WA. www.herbcottage.com.au
