Harvesting Dill

What is the best way to harvest dill?

It is a very stemmy herb, of which we only use the leaves. Should we be cutting whole stem off?

Does frequent harvesting prolong their life?

How long do they live for and do they die after flowering?

Thankyou all for you wealth of knowledge. I am totally addicted to this site!

RE: Harvesting Dill

I'm a fairly slap-dash harvester! I just snip of from the top the length of stem holding the number of leaves I want. But I don't start harvesting dill until it's at least 30cm tall, and I never take more than one-third of the leaves at any one time. Pruning dill (I prefer to call it harvesting) actually shortens the life of the plant, but it does encourage new leaf growth - for a while. The thing is, that dill is an annual, and it usually dies soon after going to seed. Dill blooms and sets seeds when nights are short and days are warm - which means it's really a cool-weather plant. It will bolt to seed in summer, and there's nothing much you can do to stop it. It's one of those herbs that is best grown in successive crops, say sowings of about 3 weeks apart for a continuous supply. Dill self-seeds readily, and can become a weed unless you remove those flowers before they become seeds, but allowing it to self-seed is also a good way of keeping up supplies - it also saves you from having to transplant, because dill doesn't like being moved around.

RE: Harvesting Dill

Hi Martika
I can't add much to what daisyduckworth has written (which I thought was very informative) but I do have another question in relation to dill.

I live in Brisbane and this winter I have had amazing dill growth. However this growth has been accompanied by a white fungus. Would either of you have any idea of what it is and if it is safe, when harvesting the dill, just to wash the fungus off before using it in cooking?
Thanks

RE: Harvesting Dill

Sorry lord gristle. Am a newcomer to dill.

Post a new question so that others will see and hopefully respond.
