I would like to hear from someone if saffron crocuses can be grown successfully in Qld, specifically on the coast.

I don't like your chances unfortunately. I'm growing Saffron in the Adelaide Hills and they produce leaves and the bulblets divide (I started with 6 bulbs and now have more than double this), but no flowers as yet. Apparently they need a frost of better still snow, to flower. I'm going to try covering them with ice next autumn, before they come up. this might just trick them into thinking they are growing in the high mountains of Persia or Kashmir.

Thanks for the feedback, Jamus. There is still hope for your saffron crocuses, as I had some in the wrong place (too shady) for years without getting any flowers.
(there is a bit more on that on my member home page)
As they used to grow saffron in Saffron Walden (UK), I would be very surprised if it didn't grow in SA.
As for QLD coastal regions, you may be right...... A couple of people have got bulbs off me and they are going to try their luck with them in QLD: Some in Hervey Bay and the others on the Goldcoast. I will eventually find out how the Goldcoast ones went because I will keep in contact with the young couple who got them off me. I would just like to be able to give any future interested people better advice on the prospects for those regions.

Boobook, thankyou very much for your tips on saffron. I'll move some of mine I think to a sunnier position and hope for the best! I suppose with regards to location, you don't know until you try.
